Representative Football - 2009. City vs Country and Australia vs New Zealand

This year's representative fixtures got under way last night when the NSWRL and the CRL hosted the annual City vs Country match, this year played at Wade Park in Orange, NSW. This is the classic Sydney or the bush contest that is used to select players for the NSW side in the up-coming State of Origin series.

City of Sydney Country New South Wales

Despite being a Country home game, City came out eventual winners: 40 - 18.

Later in the evening Australia played New Zealand in what used to be known as the ANZAC Test - deferred this year for unknown reasons and probably as part of the NRL's agenda to screw tradition and pay more attention to demands by the media who pay millions in television broadcasting rights each year.

Australia New Zealand

The Test Match was played at Suncorp Stadium (Lang Park) in Brisbane, QLD and Australia came out on top: 38 - 10.

The next representative fixture will be the first State of Origin game, NSW vs QLD, on neutral turf at Etihad Stadium (Docklands Stadium to those who, like me, find it hard keeping track of venues whose naming rights change every second week) in Melbourne, VIC on the 9th June.

I am glad Australia won as I had some money on the game. Never heard of the City/Country game before. I'll keep an eye out for that one next year.

Orange came alive for the week and trust me the buzz all week was brilliant, as was the eye candy, and even tho the country boys didnt win, it was a sell-out match.

The boys did themselves proud with Laurie Daley, Michael Ennis, Andrew Ryan and Luke Patten visiting my son's school on Thursday for a clinic.... no big deal to some but considering the students of this school all have a disabilty, my son is autistic, it was a very special day... shame the city boys only saw fit to sip lattes and parade around in their hummers.......

The City vs Country match is always a hard one for me to pick a side. I've lived in Sydney and also a number of locations in rural NSW so I don't have an underlying loyalty to either side, unlike State of Origin - I'll always be a proud New South Welshman there.
